Es Mercadal

The geographical centre of the island goes back to the days of Spain's Reconquista when it was known as Islas Baleares (Islands of Bale) and is located around the Church of Saint Marti (Iglesia de Sant Martí) and the ancient mill now turned into a restaurant.

Es Mercadal is a lovely whitewashed village, which features charming cobblestone streets. It's possible one of the most beautiful traditional rural settlements, with life in its inhabitants remaining little altered over the years.

The village is dotted with pastry shops, restaurants, and coffee bars; try Cas Sucrer's wonderful homemade cakes.

However, if you're looking for a change of pace, away from the culinary treats in the village, you can also phone and order a pair of made-to-fit abarcas (local sandals) while seeing the Aljub (water well), which was constructed during the British occupation to preserve rainwater.

The highest point on the island, El Toro Mountain, overlooks the village. On a clear day, at its peak, you may discover a lovely 14th century round tower, a Franciscan church, and a sanctuary with some of the island's finest views, living up to its name as the balcony on the skies.

Nearby, Fornells

The fishing village of Fornells, the island's major water sports center, can be found in the county of Mercadal. We recommend that you go on a sea excursion to see the northern coast, which has hidden bays, sparkling seas, and beaches.

This fishing hamlet has a modest population of 300 people but grows significantly in the summer with daytrippers, vacationers, and diners arriving at night. The town offers several excellent seafood restaurants, including la caldereta de langosta (lobster stew).
